I remember an event held once, far, far less important than a Presidential Inauguration (in fact one of those rituals in daily life that are important as markers in a friends life), and I could not decide if I should attend. It was an event where my attendance might be construed as agreement with the person's actions who was the cause of the event. I did not go. I was not missed and I didn't lie, I simply said, I had other plans. The other plan was to take care of myself. My brothers announcement yesterday was based on conviction, not convenience. It invites conflict as it must be public. But in some ways, besides his decision resting on his commitment to public service, he was taking care of himself, an important, core part of himself, his conscience.
